Breast Cancer Patient Education Act

ASPS’s chief legislative priority, the Breast Cancer Patient Education Act, was signed into law by President Obama in December 2015.  This law will ensure that women are informed of their reconstructive options prior to mastectomy as guaranteed under the Women’s Health and Cancer Rights Act of 1998. The law requires health plans that cover breast cancer treatment to also cover breast reconstruction and prostheses. Unfortunately, too many women – particularly those of racial and ethnic minority groups – never hear about the services available to them. This law, drafted and advanced by ASPS and its members, seeks to right that wrong.
